Double tragedy

Updated: Sep 13, 2020

A young polar bear was shot after killing a man in Svalbard

The attack occurred at a campsite near Longyearbyen, the main town of the island in the Svalbard archipelago. The man, identified as 38-year-old Dutch citizen Johan Jacobus Kootte, was attacked in his tent before dawn on Friday and died shortly afterwards of his injuries.

The bear was a three-year-old male whose mother had been airlifted with her cub away from Longyearbyen on Monday.

Very unfortunate, for both of them...

Strong reminder that Arctic is the natural habitat of those magnificent creatures, and we should always be very careful when entering their territory. For our own and for their good.
